Epigraphy
In archeological terms, epigraphy is the study of inscriptions that may be engraved on materials such as stone and metal. Epigraphic analysis can be applied to inscriptions found on ancient ossuaries, and provide a cultural context and date in relation to these findings. These can include an analysis of writings as well as symbols found on the artifacts.
Knowledge of the writings and languages used in the first century in the Jerusalem region can provide an important context for ossuary inscriptions. These ancient languages maintain unique grammatical structures and include Greek, Latin and Aramaic as well as Old Hebrew.
