Q: The article on the Nazarenes is somewhat behind in their scholarship. The authors cited (such as Jerome) tended to confuse the Nazarenes with the Ebionites (since the Ebionites were no longer in existence by this time period). The term Nazarene was used of the Jewish Christians of both the Ebionite and the orthodox party.

A: EPIPHANIUS (Adversus Haereses XXIX:6)

Says that there were "Nasoraeans amongst the Jews before the time of Christ".

EPIPHANIUS (367-404) A Christian Church father writes of a PRE-Christian sect, the Nasaraeans who he ditinguishes from the Christian Nazoraeans.

"These are the heads of very numerous discources which (the Naasene) asserts JAMES the brother of THE LORD handed down to MARIAMNE".

The Mandaeans call their priests Nasoreans.
