Scholars Propose Alternative Theories About Jesus Family Tomb 03/26/2007
Students at Brigham Young University are pointing to their own theories to decipher what they believe is the mystery behind the controversial tomb in East Talpiot, Jerusalem.
Led by Richard Holzapfel, managing director of the Religious Studies Center at Brigham Young University, scholars are suggesting that the individuals found in the tomb are not necessarily related. In fact, the scholars are pointing to evidence that during the first-century, Jewish burial customs sometimes included the burial of non-family members in family tombs.
The students' theories were put forth in response to The Lost Tomb of Jesus book, a companion to the film aired on the Discovery Channel earlier this month, which was tenth on last week's New York Times best seller list in the non-fiction category.
In addition, the students also emphasize that the ossuaries used in Jewish burial practices during the first century sometmes held the bones of multiple individuals.
