A: Hi bigpundaddy
I'm not officially pagan or wiccan, but I am very interested in how it blends with Christianity. I'm here looking for a discussion on that symbol above the door of the family tomb and came across your post , which seems to be the closest possible pagan link I have found in this forum so far (let me know if you find a discussion). My thoughts have always leaned toward the idea that the word "Mary" (and now "Mariamne") was less of a proper name and more of a proper noun, which is why it shows up so much in the Bible (e.g., she wasn't Mary, she was "a Mary"). My feelings are that Jesus's mother as well as the Magdalene possibly were "Maries", i.e. high pagan priestesses. It would help explain why Jesus's mother was on the lam when he was born. I could go on, but there's a starter. Anyway, like I said, I'm looking for the meaning of that symbol above the tomb door. If anyone sees a discussion on that, please let me know. Thanks!

A: It looks like an all seeing eye. Also the pagan religion is all about circles. Celtic as well. We cast circle before our rituals (prayer with flare)for protection. Everything through time has been based on circles--even the cowboy days with the wagons in a circle, protection from weather or outside forces.

A: I'm pagan thru and thru. I'm not sure what view it is you're looking for for. I agree with the other poster its as close to the all seeing eye as you can get. It could alos be half of the freemasons symbol. Pagans are very much circle and pentacle people. The only thing we have that comes close to that symbol would be half a pyramid...but who really knows. I just think this is a cool discovery for mankind period. I love archeology!!

A: There are many christian churches built on ancient pagan sites. The chevron symbol could be a sign of a house like the ones found for the Lares--spirits of the dead--found in in roman myth. There are several books published about symbols. The circle could just represent the all-seeing eye or the circle of life. And there are a lot of pagan influences all through the legends, myths and even in the bible referring to the super natural world.By super I mean above the normal physical world and in the spirit realm. We call it the fifth element..
Jesus ascended in spirit just like we all do when we die.I'm interested in culteral anthropology so finding the lost tomb of Jesus's family is very fascinating.I'm wondering how it will affect the Christians and ultimately the rest of us.I'M PROUD TO BE PAGAN and the truth has set us free.

A: Ive never seen it before. The only thing it reminds me of is an old druidic Thing called the "Rite of Three rays". The left ray denoting the female, the right ray denoting the male and a center ray denoting neutrality.
It would be traced in the air in front of you like /i\. This rite was later christainized to the Sign of the cross Catholics use on themselves.
The christain church in reality took pagan ritual and altered the meanings.
You dont have to believe this if you dont want too but it's true..
The bread and wine was originally a pagan rite called "sacrements of the earth" A druid broke bread and offered wine to the "dragon" (earth). However, this was not the only pagan religion doing this.
Druids venerated 'sunday' to the sun. They dressed in long light colored robes for the ocasion. The christains that came into europe were MONKS that flowed in with the Romans. They eventually took the Day, the robes and the rituals.
The druidic 'staff' became the priest's sceptor.Churches were built on old druidic holy ground throuout Egland and Ireland. These sites were mapped out by druids through 'Ley lines" or ' dragon lines'. They were earthly lines of magnetics that at certain places crossed. The points were special to druids.
I have a 10' 8-stone circle set up on one of these. when people ask me what it is I tell them it's an ancient form of science. Trees will naturally grow Along or very near them in a line. Sometimes a very straight line, and they will look like they were planted that way.
I know some of you guys think im crazy, but when a person lives amongst the forest for so long, you can get a little wierd.
For anyone that really has an intrest...My circle is directional.... An OLD 28 ft deep spring fed well directly behind the west stone, a dimensionally correct hand made iron "dragon bell' hanging off a branch of an old cedar directly to the east, A natural small earth rise to the north, (in which a ley line follows btw), and small iron candle holders hugging the south stone. Direction coordinates are spot on, and the spot has been there for centuries. It only required someone to recognize it. ( in reality, it recognized me).
Fire pit in the middle, nice clear night with a moon ,and pull up a stone!!
Now you guys can say Im really crazy.....

A: I think Carl Jung would have much to say about this. There are many symbols around the world that seem to crop up in different places without any real physical connection.
I chose the name Mark-Tao, because I found it interesting that the ossuary connected with jesus had an X on it. In hebrew it is called a Tao. It also looks like a tilted cross.
If you google the word Tao, you will find a list of sites dedicated to the Taoist religion. Many of the Taoist sayings look to be exact quotes from the teachings of Jesus. It's as if Jesus was a Zen Master.
Jung talked about archetypes of the unconscious. He postulated that there were certain themes and symbols that belonged to all humanity. It is possible that various religions can have overlapping symbols without there being any overt influence from one religion to another.

A: Mark, yes, and he claimed those symbols and influences left by past civilizations are buried just beneath the subconcious waiting for a trigger.
As crazy as it sounds, there just may be some truth to it.

A: The chevron could be the top of the pyramid that represented the human psyche and use of mind and innerconscienceness. The circle could represent the eye of the beholder or how one percieves spiritual matter above the mundane. After all the eye is the key to the soul. When we learn to meditate one trains to use more than the mere one-tenth of the brain represented by the point of the pyramid and which is used as our daily conscious mind.In otherwords they learn to dig deeper to reach the Universal Mind and develope latent psi-abilities.
Of course common sense would show that the marks could have just been carved at the entrance so that family members could find their family crypt easily---just like grave markers employed today.

A: I need to add that the EYE refers to the Third Eye of Universal Consciousness. It is located in between the two physical eyes slightly above the bridge of the nose and is the key point of the inner- spirit connection. There are different exercises that can be learned to activate it and there are many books on the subject matter. It isn't a secret anymore.

A: Rather than keep any one interested in expanding their horizons or willing to add more dimension to their lives in suspense I'm going to list the titles of two really good books about this knowledge.Good Luck and Peace
365 Days Of The Goddess by Patricia Telesco, the July 31st page. And
The Secrets Of High Magic by Francis Melville
Both books have excellent bibliographies and are full of surprises.

And the teachings of Jesus closely resemble Bhakti Yoga, or, the devotional serving of God. And the Koran (al-Qur'an) has numerous examples of true devotion to god:
'Nor shall those be blamed who, when they came to you demanding conveyances to the battle-front and you could find none to carry them, went away in tears grieving that they had not the means to contribute.'
- al-Qur'an, surat at-tawba (Repentance) [9:92], 'translated' by N. J. Dawood (a translation of the Koran is but a mere commentary)
The quoted passage [9:92] is one of my personal favourites.
My point is that most beliefs and traditions differ merely superficially. A Huichol on peyotl has seemingly little in common with a rabbi studying the Talmud, or a shaivist chanting his mantra on the shores of the river Ganga (Ganges) -- yet all strive to attain that sense of inner peace (in one form or another).

Of course. It is much easier to convert people once the old rituals have been assimilated into the new faith and the churches / temples built on top of or close to existing sites of worship or pilgrimage.
Christmas is a fine example of this. It existed probably thousands of years before it became a christian thing in the northern parts of Europe.

A: whoa... paganism is circles? Way to simplify guys. Saying paganism is about circles is like saying Arabians are about sand.
I'm pagan.
History is history. Checks your books. When Christianity became a political power it strove to drive the pagans out. Ever done any history on St. Patrick's day? Most Christian holidays were placed closely to pagan sabbats to draw the ppl away from the savage rituals. Ugh.
Now the symbol above the door could lead to some interesting discussion. I don't know how likely it is that Mary was a high priestess. In Bethlahem? I do know that the triangle is an ancient symbol for the feminine and the dot is also an ancient symbol of the sun. Bring them together how they are and I don't know what they mean.

A: Feminine = generation =] ultimate source.
Circle = sun = manifestation in the world.
The meaning would be "Jesus is the messenger of G-d".
But it may be reading too much since the wishbone and circle are ubiquitous.
Please search for pictures of Baptistere Saint-Jean, Poitiers, France, 360 AD.
It may establish the heritage.

A: Maya were sacrificing human to their sun god . They were afraid the sun would have quit rising after a night, otherwise. The offsprings of mayas are around of us today. In full version of their bigotry but in fashion shape of unbelievers in One God.
