Q: Do Buddhists believe in a god?
No, we do not. There are several reasons for this. The Buddha, like modern sociologists and psychologists, believed that religious ideas and especially the god idea have their origins in fear. The Buddha says:
Gripped by fear people go to sacred mountains, sacred groves, sacred trees and shrines.
Dp. 188
Primitive humans found selves in a dangerous and hostile world, the fear of wild animals, of not being able to find enough food, of injury or disease, and of natural phenomena like thunder, lightning and volcanoes were constantly with them. Finding no security, they created the idea of gods in order to give them comfort in good times, courage in times of danger and consolation when things went wrong. To this day, you will notice that people become more religious at times of crises, you will hear them say that the belief in a god or gods gives them the strength they need to deal with life. You will hear them explain that they believe in a particular god because they prayed in time of need and their prayer was answered. All this seems to support the Buddha's teaching that the god-idea is a response to fear and frustration. The Buddha taught us to try to understand our fears, to lessen our desires and to calmly and courageously accept the things we cannot change. He replaced fear, not with irrational belief but with rational understanding.
The second reason the Buddha did not believe in a god is because there does not seem to be any evidence to support this idea. There are numerous religions, all claiming that they alone have god's words preserved in their holy book, that they alone understand god's nature, that their god exists and that the gods of other religions do not. Some claim that god is masculine, some that she is feminine and others that it is neuter. They are all satisfied that there is ample evidence to prove the existence of their god but they laugh in disbelief at the evidence other religions use to prove the existence of another god. It is not surprising that with so many different religions spending so many centuries trying to prove the existence of their gods that still no real, concrete, substantial or irrefutable evidence has been found. Buddhists suspend judgement until such evidence is forthcoming.
The third reason the Buddha did not believe in a god is that the belief is not necessary. Some claim that the belief in a god is necessary in order to explain the origin of the universe. But this is not so. Science has very convincingly explained how the universe came into being without having to introduce the god-idea. Some claim that belief in god is necessary to have a happy, meaningful life. Again we can see that this is not so. There are millions of atheists and free-thinkers, not to mention many Buddhists, who live useful, happy and meaningful lives without belief in a god. Some claim that belief in god's power is necessary because humans, being weak, do not have the strength to help themselves. Once again, the evidence indicates the opposite. One often hears of people who have overcome great disabilities and handicaps, enormous odds and difficulties through their own inner resources, through their own efforts and without belief in a god. Some claim that god is necessary in order to give man salvation. But this argument only holds good if you accept the theological concept of salvation and Buddhists do not accept such a concept. Based on his own experience, the Buddha saw that each human being had the capacity to purify the mind, develop infinite love and compassion and perfect understanding. He shifted attention from the heavens to the heart and encouraged us to find solutions to our problems through self-understanding.
But if there are no gods how did the universe get here?
All religions have myths and stories which attempt to answer this question. In ancient times, when humankind simply did not know, such myths were adequate, but in the 20th century, in the age of physics, astronomy and geology, such myths have been superseded by scientific fact. Science has explained the origin of the universe without recourse to the god-idea.
What does the Buddha say about the origin of the universe?
It is interesting that the Buddha's explanation of the origin of the universe corresponds very closely to the scientific view. In the Aganna Sutta, the Buddha describes the universe being destroyed and then re-evolving into its present form over a period of countless millions of years. The first life formed on the surface of the water and again, over countless millions of years, evolved from simple into complex organisms. All these processes are without beginning or end and are set in motion by natural causes.
You say there is no evidence for the existence of a god. But what about miracles?
There are many who believe that miracles are proof of god's existence. We hear wild claims that a healing has taken place but we never get an independent testimony from a medical office or a surgeon. We hear second-hand reports that someone was miraculously saved from disaster but we never get an eyewitness account of what is supposed to have happened. We hear rumors that prayer straightened a diseased body or strengthened a withered limb, but we never see X-rays or get comments from doctors or nurses. Wild claims, second-hand reports and rumors are no substitute for solid evidence and solid evidence of miracles is very rare. However, sometimes unexplained things do happen, unexpected events do occur. But our inability to explain such things does not prove the existence of gods. It only proves that our knowledge is as yet incomplete. Before the development of modern medicine, when people didn't know what caused sickness people believed that god or the gods sent diseases as a punishment. Now we know what causes such things and when we get sick, we take medicine. In time when our knowledge of the world is more complete, we will be able to understand what causes unexplained phenomena, just as we can now understand what causes disease.
But so many people believe in some form of god, it must be true.
Not so. There was a time when everyone believed that the world was flat, but they were all wrong. The number of people who believe in an idea is no measure of the truth or falsehood of that idea. The only way we can tell whether an idea is true or not is by looking at the facts and examining the evidence.
So if Buddhists don't believe in gods, what do you believe in?
We don't believe in a god because we believe in humanity. We believe that each human being is precious and important, that all have the potential to develop into a Buddha - a perfected human being. We believe that humans can outgrow ignorance and irrationality and see things as they really are. We believe that hatred, anger, spite and jealousy can be replaced by love, patience, generosity and kindness. We believe that all this is within the grasp of each person if they make the effort, guided and supported by fellow Buddhists and inspired by the example of the Buddha. As the Buddha says:
No one saves us but ourselves, No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path, but Buddhas clearly show the way.

The-y- tried to find enlightenment through deprivation of worldly goods, including food, practising 1. self-mortification. After nearly starving himself to death by restricting his food intake to around a leaf or nut per day, he collapsed in a river while bathing and almost drowned.

A- - STARVING HIMSELF TO DEATH !!!: Buddha did not have any knowledge about the fact that the body of any living creature needs nutrition to sustain life, and depriving it for these essential, not only had a negative effect on the moving parts of the body, but also on the BRAIN.
Buddha by doing that not only became weak in his body but he lost most of the abilities to to THINK straight.

YOU THINK THAT THE SCIENTISTS OF ALL AGES WILL COME TO THEIR DISCOVERIES IN ALL THE SCIENTIFIC FIELDS BY MEDITATING UNDER THE TREES OR IN CAVES ?. GALILEO , HUBBLE THEY DISCOVERED HOW OUR UNIVERSE WORKS NOT BY MEDITATION.
THOSE SCIENTISTS WHO WORKED TO FIND THE CURE FOR MANY ILLNESSES THAT CAUSE A LOT OF SUFFERING FOR THE HUMAN THEY DID NOT SIT UNDER A TREE MEDITATING, I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING.

A: Buddha was not a god, never claimed to be a god, and did not call himself a god. He lived his life like a nor mall human He was awake and a human just like you and me, he bled, got sick and he he died of food poisoning. A god would not die from food poisoning.
--- Yes Buddha never claimed himself as a god, but he was a great teacher..., he is a human yet not an ordinary human, he reached the enlightenment, a maximum knowledge.. has neutral condition of anything around... he understood more than us could expected , the only way you can reached by practice meditation...
if you ever meet dhamma (buddha's teaching), then you have found a priceless, extraordinary diamond... , you can find out by yourself, why buddha is so special ... whatever your belief, you still can accept dhamma, because dhamma is truth .. valuable life knowledge... with loving based teaching, if you don't like it then you can leave it immediately..
~When asked if he were a God, Buddha said No. "Then, teacher, what are you?" to which he replied... "Awake!"
So the Buddha is not a God He is a teacher of all the things he learnt in his life.
But one more thing a normall human would just die as we know but when the Buddha died he met his enlightenment.
No, Buddha is not a God. Buddha was a man named Siddharta Gautama, who was the first person to recieve enlightenment, or nirvana...

A: THE DOCTRINE OF NO-SOUL: ANATTA
What in generally is suggested by Soul, Self, Ego, or to use the Sanskrit expression Ātman, is that in man there is a permanent, everlasting and absolute entity, which is the unchanging substance behind the changing phenomenal world. According to some religions, each individual has such a separate soul which is created by God, and which, finally after death, lives eternally either in hell or heaven, its destiny depending on the judgment of its creator. According to others, it goes through many lives till it is completely purified and becomes finally united with God or Brahman, Universal Soul or Ātman, from which it originally emanated. This soul or self in man is the thinker of thoughts, feeler of sensations, and receiver of rewards and punishments for all its actions good and bad. Such a conception is called the idea of self.
Buddhism stands unique in the history of human thought in denying the existence of such a Soul, Self, or Ātman. According to the teaching of the Buddha, the idea of self is an imaginary, false belief which has no corresponding reality, and it produces harmful thoughts of 'me' and 'mine', selfish desire, craving, attachment, hatred, ill-will, conceit, pride, egoism, and other defilements, impurities and problems. It is the source of all the troubles in the world from personal conflicts to wars between nations. In short, to this false view can be traced all the evil in the world.
Two ideas are psychologically deep-rooted in man; self-protection and self-preservation. For self-protection man has created God, on whom he depends for his own protection, safety and security, just as a child depends on its parent. For self-preservation man has conceived the idea of an immortal Soul or Ātman, which will live eternally. In his ignorance, weakness, fear, and desire, man needs these two things to console himself. Hence he clings to them deeply and fanatically.
The Buddha's teaching does not support this ignorance, weakness, fear, and desire, but aims at making man enlightened by removing and destroying them, striking at their very root. According to Buddhism, our ideas of God and Soul are false and empty. Though highly developed as theories, they are all the same extremely subtle mental projections, garbed in an intricate metaphysical and philosophical phraseology. These ideas are so deep-rooted in man, and so near and dear to him, that he does not wish to hear, nor does he want to understand, any teaching against them.
The Buddha knew this quite well. In fact, he said that his teaching was 'against the current' (patisotagāmi), against man's selfish desire. Just four weeks after his Enlightenment, seated under a banyan tree, he thought to himself; 'I have realized this Truth which is deep, difficult to understand. comprehensible only by the wise. Men who are overpowered by passions and surrounded by a mass of darkness cannot see this Truth, which is against the current, which is lofty, deep, subtle and hard to comprehend.'
With these thoughts in his mind, the Buddha hesitated for a moment, whether it would not be in vain if he tried to explain to the world the Truth he had just realized. Then he compared the world to a lotus pond: In a lotus pond there are some lotuses still under water; there are others which have risen only up to the water level; there are still others which stand above water and are untouched by it. In the same way in this world, there are men at different levels of development. Some would understand the Truth. So the Buddha decided to teach it. [1]
The doctrine of Anatta or No-Soul is the natural result of, or the corollary to, the analysis of the Five Aggregates and the teaching of Conditioned Genesis (Paticca-samuppāda).[2]
We have seen earlier, in the discussion of the First Noble Truth (Dukkha), that what we call a being or an individual is composed of the Five Aggregates, and that when these are analysed and examined, there is nothing behind them which can be taken as 'I', Ātman, or Self, or any unchanging abiding substance. That is the analytical method. The same result is arrived at through the doctrine of Conditioned Genesis which is the synthetical method, an according to this nothing in the world is absolute. Everything is conditioned, relative, and interdependent. This is the Buddhist theory of relativity.

- I do agree with you as what you said above about Buddha, and I do like to say that he is no more than a great philosopher, some good knowledge , but his scientific knowledge about the universe, and the earth, and the creation of life on this earth, and the “soul” is “ZERO”, “NIL”, like the knowledge of the people of his time.
On your previous post, you brought the works of two Buddhists who tried to make Buddha knowledge equals to the scientific knowledge of the 21st century.
“UNIVERSE IN BUDDHISM” - I Did prove them wrong . 90 millions Km is not the same as 149 Millions Km - and the following is what brought from Buddha’s works:

One world system. Can you define that world system from amongst the world [the universe] which the science knows up to now , is it the earth, since you mentioned the ‘Human beings and the continents’ , and ‘Vertically above it, and vertically under” or not, or what?. THAT IS WHAT WE CALL NONSENSE AND NOT SCIENCE.
1- There is no scientific, or any good information in all the above writings.
2- Mountains , seas, continents of that sort, never been mentioned in any scientific book, they are not there, and I do not think that even NASA, or the National Geographic society, or any other will find such places, not on the earth, and not in the universe. And you should know better.
3- HELL & HEAVEN , Above what & under what ?, also that prove their existence, as other religions [what religion ?, is it the Hindu ? .
- Hell & heaven - Why Buddha teachings mention them, and why Buddhists accept them as they are there, while they do not believe in God and the judgment day ???. So, for what purpose they needed?.
4-Are the Hell & Heaven for the human beings only, or they are for all the living things on that continent, as animals, birds, insects, trees etc., since you believe that every life form was originated from one single cell, and by the time an evolution took place to create everything ?.
5- Buddhists believes that the human race came throughout millions of years of evolution and his ancestors are the “APES” race . And they do not believe I the “SOUL” * or in life after death

Is that means that when human dies , will turn into dust, and that is it ?. Therefore what are the need for Hell & Heaven ???.

{That is the Hindus believe , and it is not true. Human, man or woman, when born they are separate individual Human Beings, and they live for a period and eventually they die, and will turn into dust, and they do not come back, or became in another forms [lower form - cow, rat, monkey etc.] for several times, and there is no proof for that myth. Millions of people believe it as true, and follow that belief blindly, even many are of very high education , I WONDER WHAT KIND OF BRAIN THEY USE .

VVK, The “HAMMOND MEDALLION WORD ATLAS” is a great source of scientific information in geography and history. You might find this book in the library. I bought this book few years back, it show an illustration of:
1- The Earth : Its perspective in space.
2- The development of continents and oceans.
3- Changing the face of the earth.
4- THE GEOLOGIC RECORD. [Plus tons of other stuff]
In this section, it presents a diagram for the evolution of life on earth, from the “CAMBRIAN” period, 600 million years ago where only the Sponge, Worm, Trilobite existed, and there after the many other periods , until it comes to the “TETIARY” period, 60 million years ago , where the Octopus, Platipus, toothless bird, Angiosperm tree etc., came to exist.
After, came the “QUATERNARY” period , 2 million years until now, and they call it “MODERN PERIOD” and they listed the following with their pictures:
Primitive man - Modern man- Ape - Monkey - Tarsier - Deer - Cow - Pig - Horse - Elephant- Bear - Dog - Cat - Whale _ Squirrel - Rabbit - Bat - Shrew - Opossum- Kangaroo.
Then follow it by:
Modern Birds - Modern Reptiles - Modern Amphibians - Modern Fishes - Modern Arthropods - Modern Lower Invertebrates - Modern Plants.
In total they listed 12 Geological periods -from 600 million years up to now 99.9 % of species that lived on earth became extinct.

This is a Follow -up to the “GEOLOGIC RECORD” in the previous post.

From the above we understand that MAN [Primitive or Modern] came along with millions of other species during the same period , which is only about 2 million years, and which is a small fraction from 600 millions years, when the first living creatures created on earth.
Sponge/worm 600m/y - Scorpion/ shark/Shrimp 350m/y - Crocodile/Fish 225m/y - Snake/ Crab 135m/y -Octopus/Bird 40m/y are just few from millions more, those who came to earth from very long time and they still here surviving as the same as when they created, NO CHANGE, they are with us surviving along with the MODERN creatures, and MAN too.
THE EVOLUTION THEORY:
This Theory came first through the teaching of Buddha , and later on by Darwin.
Darwin : There are four common mechanisms of evolution: 1) Natural selection - 2)Genetic drift - 3) Mutation - 4) Gene flow.
When Darwin came with his theory, to prove that human came from Apes ancestry, because of shapes/acts/ genes etc. , he makes a big mistake:
- The lesser Apes (16 species)- The great Apes (3 species) ...Orangutans, Gorillas, Chimpanzees.
And Mr. Darwin thought that the CHIMP is perfect to use to prove his own theory, and to make him [THE CHIMP] the father of the HUMAN species !!!.
The CHIMP is still laughing, howling, jumping, in the jungle and for more than a million year , and the FIRST CHIMP is the same as the LAST CHIMP of the 21st century.
....NO CHANGE...
Of course, we can teach the CHIMP few tricks, and we can do the same with many animals and birds, but when they die their descendent will never perform those tricks, WHY, because the CHIMP genes was not created to do those functions, and his brain today is the same as his brain a million year ago.
A close similarity in Genes it is there between many animal, and even 99% of similar GENES does not make ONE SPECIES MOVE TO ANOTHER SPECIES, and will not bring Dog to become a Horse, or a Rat to become Pig, or a CHIMP to become a man.
Quran - 95:4 WE HAVE CERTAINLY CREATED MAN IN THE BEST OF STATURE.

First of all, thank You for all best wish , I would like to do the same to You and all Your family members.
In exchanging knowledge between religions, don't be shock or upset if You find out anything is not the same with Your believe or in the Quran teaching.
I will give You some of answer, but remember this, I'm still learning Buddhism so some of my answer might not be the best. or the right one.
Would You please to read again the first part of (Universe in Buddhism) There is no single sutra that describes the entire Shape of the Universe .... therefore the Abhidharmakoßa-bhásya. May be some purpose of this documentary could be used on Buddhist meditation,or personal Practice technique way ... etc (like some practicing on diagramed of Mandala in Mahayana Buddhism...). Shuichi Yamamoto and Victor Kuwahara in their personal writing to used these...They might or might not be right .
Your question is to point out exactly where the Mounts, havens, hells , seas ,continents ...in which planet in the universe..., They are really existence or not in somewhere in one (1 billion worlds) or more world systems in the Universe, scientists they don't know yet. For easy to understand it clearly. If all concerning You have in Your questions, the terms: Mounts, Havens, Hells ,Seas, Continents ... by replacing them with 1st Haven , 2nd Haven, 3rd Haven... up to 7th Haven which describes in Holly Quran. US NASA, or National Geographic ,or any scientific book, they did not find or mentioned any such places on any planet in the Galaxies or universe to have the rivers of milk , honey or wine... to recognize Those one is the Allah's havens in the universe ???. WILL YOU CALL NONSENSE AND NOT SCIENCE or every thing in Holly Quran is foolish teach and talk about things which is not true???
I also repeat again Buddha from human being, and He said 'EVERY BEING WILL BECOME A BUDDHA.' I never claimed that Buddha knows everything. He allows his students (Buddhists) can change of his teaching to adapting with new social or culture of countries they are living in , And He also allows Buddhists can find difference teacher if they recognized of his teaching is not right or helpful any more to them. There is no problem at all to do that in practicing Buddhism. Buddha give freedom to his student to chose their own believe . If apply the same rules on Islam. Can Muslims change all defect in Holly Quran???. How about Holly Quran??? Only 1400 years ago. Islam is the newest major religion in the world, It can get all cultures or knowledge from all countries or other religions.

You mentioned that Buddha talked about the Big Bang and the Expanding universe and others, to prove that Buddhist wrote scientific things, and I will tell you the truth that they know nothing, just naive people who try to question even God !!!
