Hello Friends,
PBS, the Public television channel in the US, aired a 6-part documentary on what I would term "the history of religion in the US". By 'history', I mean going back to the very beginnings of European occupation of the Americas (and even before).
Sam and I have been exchanging over the summer of 2012 on various topics. It seem à propos to create a page that speaks exclusively about the development of religion in the US.
I am from Quebec, Canada, the French-Catholic part of North America.
Listening today to the 6 parts of this wonderful documentary, God In America, for the 2nd time now, allowed me to re-visit my amateurish analysis of Evangelical Christianity in the US.
Sam, Part-6 begins with saying that Evangelical Christianity took a 'back seat' in US society in 1925.
In 1925, in the US South, there was a famous trial.
It was called the "Scopes Trial", or, the "Monkey Trial".
A high school teacher was arrested for teaching evolution.
The trial that ensued put the discussion (argument) over "creation and evolution" on the front pages of newspapers in the US.
A movie was made about this trial :
"Inherit The Wind"

This 1960 movie is available on DVD now, Sam.
I bought my copy in the grocery store here in Quebec a couple of years ago.
I am pretty sure you can find a copy of it in Toronto.
The dialogue is rapid and quotes the Bible a lot.
Even the title is a verse from the Bible.
The dialogue in the movie is the exact dialogue that was recorded in the court room in 1925.
I watch it with the English sub-titles on.
This helps me to understand what is being said by the two lawyers.
I think you'd enjoy seeing seeing "Inherit The Wind", a wonderful, black and white film, Sam.
I think you'd enjoy part-6 of the PBS series entitled "God In America".
Part-6's title is "Of God and Cesar".

Since Catholicism in French Canada deeply imprints my cultural background, Iearning about the history of the Evangelical movement in the US is a deliberate effort for me.
Since Evangelical Christianity has been a powerful political force in the US and since it shapes in part foreing policy, it is useful to watch this amazing series, and in particular, part-6.

1. Movie clip for Inherit The Wind (1925) (first minutes only)
I found a Youtube clip of the first minutes of the 1960 movie, Inherit The Wind, on the famous 'monkey trial' in the US South in 1925, where a biology teacher was on trial for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution :

Good morning,
As for "God In America", documentary, I open the site, and start watching, "A New Adam", and I remember that I watch this documentary before, and remember that you sent me this site. It is a good one and I will be watching all the 6 parts later on. Thank you for bringing that back to me.
Dear Indie,
As the movie, ""Inherit The Wind" , I did watch this movie, and it came twice on TV , and watching it for the second time was better, and it is a great movie, and I do think the black & white is the right way because it put the eyes and the mind on the main subject , the actors & the people, and not at the surrounding room.

Just finished watching, "Part-6's title is "Of God and Cesar".
A lot of changes are happening in the US, and in every aspect of life , and also all around the world.
Our world getting smaller and our problems are growing in all directions.
population are increasing fast, and the resouces are decreasing fast.
There is too much spending and waste for the war machine, which can be used to bring better life to all , all around the world.
Military expenditure [2011] in US$:
World spendings:
1,546,529,200,000 That is over one and half trillion Dollars
And the US alone spend, 687,105,000,000 that is 41% of the world total!
Year after year countries all around the world are preparing for 'war', even those small and tiny islands in the sea , 'Malta' 58.8 M ...'Fiji' 50.2 M, and not to forget the poor country too, like Somalia !!!.
IT IS A MAD ,MAD WORLD.
The world is governed by people [politicians and religious] who only care about their seats and wealth, and they lie to get those seats and they take advantage of the honest ones who really care about bringing peace and prosparity to the world.
If they do not act now, then it will be too late, and the future generations will suffer.
