Christian Leaders Weigh In on Jesus Family Tomb Discovery 03/07/2007
Leaders of churches across the United States have rejected the Jesus tomb findings, dismissing also DNA evidence that Jesus likely fathered a son.
Christians believe in the physical and spiritual resurrection and ascension of Jesus to heaven, events which are celebrated during Easter
“There’s so much bad information being presented these past few weeks,” stated Susan Gibbs with regard to the findings, spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.
Church leaders are also pointing out that the tomb cannot be that of Jesus and his family because of its location in East Talpiot, Jerusalem. ‘‘You can’t understand the biblical stories unless you understand the cultural context,” Reverand David Pearcy of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Silver Spring stated. While he has not seen the documentary, he has studied the findings and believes that they conflict with oral tradition. ‘‘The tomb of Jesus doesn’t make sense culturally for the people of that part of Jerusalem,” Pearcy adds, noting that Jesus grew up in Nazareth. Pearcy contends that during Jesus’ time, the family plot was local. “He wouldn’t have been buried there,” he concludes.
